Clan Cameron Museum is located approximately 15 miles North East of Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. It celebrates the rich history of clan Cameron, dating back to the beginning of the 15th century.

The Clan Cameron Museum

Clan Cameron were strong supporters of the Jacobite cause. Indeed the Jacobite rising of 1745 might never have happened if clan Cameron had not marched out. The clan regiment fought at the battles of Prestonpans, Falkirk, and Culloden and was regarded as a crack unit. As many as 800 men may have served in its ranks over the course of the rising.

The museum is housed in an old, traditional building close to the historic site of Achnacarry. This 17th century listed building was in fact partially burned by the soldiers of the Duke of Cumberland’s army in 1746 before being left derelict.

There is an extensive section in the museum on Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745 in which the Camerons played a crucial part.

There are also a number of items housed here which directly relate to Bonnie Prince Charlie, including one of his waistcoats and a stunning Jacobite ring, which when opened by a secret spring, reveals a portrait of the Prince. There is also a copy of Gentle Lochiel’s (Chief Donald Cameron’s) Bible, which has all references to King George of Hanover inked out, a common Jacobite practice of the time.

At the Clan Cameron museum you can also delve into the many stories of how the members of the clan were affected by the aftermath of the battle of Culloden.
